The center of fashion manufacturing and fashion design, the Garment District is located between 5th and 9th avenue from 34th – 42nd street. Many believe that New York City is the fashion capital of the world, and the Garment District is home base for world class designers of everything from clothing and jewelry to handbags and shoes.
Sadly, the Garment District actually started out as the world’s largest manufacturer of clothing for slaves on plantations in the South. Slave masters found it easier and more cost-efficient to buy their slaves clothing that was mass-produced rather than making it themselves or buying it from local shops.
Today the Garment District is home to the only permanent landmark dedicated to American Fashion – The Fashion Walk of Fame.
