I always thought that the 92nd Street Y on The Upper East Side was part of the YMCA, however, it turns out that the full name of this popular cultural institution is 92nd Street Young Men’s and Young Women’s Hebrew Association. Founded in 1874 as men’s professional organization for those of German-Jewish background, the 92nd Street Y now serves members of all faiths, genders and races.
