Remember that scene from An Affair to Remember (or for the younger generations Sleepless in Seattle or Gossip Girl)? That moment when you wonder will she show up? Will he make it in time? You clench at your seat – hoping for a happily ever after. Every time I see the Empire State Building on the Manhattan skyline I am transported back to that moment. I’ve still never been to the top – but I’ve stood beneath it and marveled as it’s magnificence many times. I’ve even walked through the lobby…imagining myself one of those people lucky enough to grace it’s corridors every day.
History
The Empire State Building stood as the tallest building in New York City for 40 years, until completion of the World Trade Center in 1972. After the attacks on September 11th – the Empire State Building once again became the tallest building in NYC. Considered a cultural icon, the building stands 1,454 feet high – and houses 85 stories of commercial office space.
The 1964 World Fair depicted the building as the Eighth wonder of the world – and with good reason. Just pass by the building at night and gaze at the illuminated panels remembering that those panels were constructed in 1963 and you’ll agree – it was a tremendous feat of mankind for it’s time.
